According to English calendar New Year starts from the month of January. But in India, Hindu celebrates other new year which is start from Hindu month “Chaitra” (in between March and April). It starts with a holy festival named Chaitra Navratri. The nine-day festival of Navrati in hindu religion is dedicated to the nine manifestations of goddess Durga. Generally Navratri is celebrated four times in a year but the most significant, based on its public celebration, are two- Chaitra Navratri and Sharad Navratri. Both are held most important season junction of the year- during the onset of spring season and again during the commencement of the winter season. So according to Hindu calendar first day of New Year is first day of Chaitra Navratri.
The meaning of “Navratri” is ‘nine nights’. That mean it celebrated for whole nine days and nine nights. It is also one of the most ancient festivals. Each day of Navratri is dedicated to each form of Goddess Maa Shakti ‘the divine mother’. In order to have the blessings of Maa Shakti in human life, Hindus worship Maa Durga and all her feminine aspects. As most festivals are intertwined with their seasonal aspect, Navratri is hardly an exception. It generally falls in March or April. The ninth day during Chaitra Navaratri is also celebrated as Ram Navami as the birthday of Lord Rama. It is also known as “Vasant Navratri”.
Chaitra Naveatri is celebrated with immense pomp and shows whole of India, but especially the Northern states. In most of places, a huge fair is organized in the Shakti temples.
